In this jam-packed issue of FSM, we go in-depth with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin about his career, and pro wrestling in 2011; look at the career of Crimson, and why his push in TNA isn't clicking with crowds; consider Mark Henry's 15 years in WWE, and why his athletic background has stood him in good stead; FSM talks to Daniel Bryan about his year in WWE; look back on how it was Smackdown that first brought people together after the tragedy of 9/11; how Dragon Gate is bucking the trend by prospering in Japan; FSM highlights the wrestlers who have entertained us the most down the years; and we celebrate the career of Jim Cornette with some stories from his past.
All of this, plus the usual review of all the news, pay-per-views, TV shows, and DVDs, plus our insightful columns by Lance Storm, Nick "Magnus" Aldis, RD Reynolds, and Bill Apter.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin rated The Rock’s return to wrestling with one massive digit — but instead of using his trademark middle finger salute … dude gave the guy a “big thumbs up.” Austin was cruising through LAX yesterday when we asked him about The Rock’s appearance at WrestleMania — and dude had nothing but good things to say about it. Among the complements … Austin said The Rock is one of his “favorite opponents of all time.” Stunning.
Kevin Sullivan of the New York Times is featuring excerpts from his new book, The WWE Championship. His latest excerpt comes from “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who talks about the night he lost the WWE Championship to Chris Jericho in December of 2001 at the Vengeance pay-per-view.
“I remember being very fried. That was a complete phone-in job and I didn’t even phone it in; hell, I got hung up on. That was one of my worst performances ever. I’m honest enough to say that I didn’t really give a shit what happened that night. And it wasn’t about losing the belt either, because I really like Jericho I consider him a friend. It didn’t have anything to do with anybody in the ring. I was just totally frazzled, I was running hard in every direction and I just wanted that night to be over. I definitely didn’t need the belt at that time because I was too damn tired. We were running hard. I was living pretty fast. I was physically and mentally scrambled. I don’t have a lot of memories of that match other than I stunk.”
WWE will be producing a complete, final compilation DVD on the career of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, the WWE Hall of Famer revealed Wednesday on Twitter.
Austin did not reveal when the DVD will be released. He said the focus will be capturing his career all the way through from beginning to end.
“WWE is going to do a final DVD story on my career in the ring. Very in-depth look from start to finish. I’m very much looking forward to it,” Austin said.
“I want to hear questions from the fans. I will get an address for questions tomorrow. This will be the be all, end all DVD collection.”
If you thought that CM Punk only had eyes for the WWE championship you are mistaken. According to reports, CM Punk wants to wrestle WWE Hall of Fame superstar Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 28.
The report certainly makes some sense out of recent actions from Punk. For one, it didn’t go unnoticed that Punk was wearing a Steve Austin t-shirt when he cut that now infamous promo on RAW Roulette. Two, he has mentioned WrestleMania numerous times including his demand to be in the main-event. Could the WWE Universe actually see a WrestleMania in 2012 featuring the two biggest WWE superstars of the last generation?
Dave Meltzer reports in his latest Wrestling Observer newsletter that Punk has set his sights on the former WWE champion.
“Punk has wanted to return before Mania, and wants to face Steve Austin on that show. We’re told the likelihood of that happening is low.”
Meltzer also speculates that this match is likely not going to happen. Steve Austin has made conflicting statements about returning to the ring over the last year, his last statements being that he was done. But is there a chance, even a slim one, that we can see the Texas Rattlesnake co-headlining WrestleMania with the Great One?
I hope not. I think the timing would be wrong for an Austin vs. Punk match. Punk has clearly positioned himself going into Money in the Bank as a babyface. My hunch is that whatever happens on Sunday will result in Punk leaving Chicago as an even bigger hero to his followers. Putting him in a match with Austin would make him an immediate heel, retarding all of the progress the WWE would theoretically have made with Punk by next spring.
Steve Austin has not wrestled in years, other than a brief workout in the ring on Tough Enough against Luke Robinson. Could he still deliver an Austin-like performance on the big stage? I don’t have any reason to believe he can’t. Unless I missed something, I don’t recall reading about any serious injuries to Austin in the last few years. He looks to be in the best shape of his life right now. He looked great against Robinson, albeit for a couple of minutes. Why the heck not?
Austin has flirted with the idea of coming back for another big WrestleMania match over the last few years. The last one I remember was a rumor about a plan for Austin to wrestle Ken Anderson at a WrestleMania a few years back. For a number of reasons that never took place, but if he was ever going to make his comeback I can’t think of a better time than now.
In a twist of irony or coincidence, Austin was asked about wrestling CM Punk in an interview back in April on WWE.com. Austin was asked about a potential rivalry against Punk based on the WWE All Stars “Fantasy Warfare” mode in which they are matched up.
“Damn right it is. CM Punk is one of my favorite WWE Superstars right now. I like what he brings to the ring, I like his mental game. I think a rivalry between “Stone Cold” and CM Punk would have been a hell of a spectacle and a lot of entertainment.”
If Austin were interested, it would be a tricky situation for the WWE. In a perfect world Austin would come back at WrestleMania 29, leaving the spotlight all on The Rock vs. John Cena. But, anything can happen by WrestleMania 29. Austin could change his mind which is probably the biggest thing to fear. More importantly, CM Punk may not be nearly as hot in 2013 as he will be by next year. Does anyone have any confidence in the WWE to sustain Punk’s push for two and a half years?
I think it is fair to point out the hypocrisy here when it comes to Punk and his current promos. Punk has regularly blasted the WWE and Dwayne Johnson for just walking into the WrestleMania 28 main-event without putting the time in to “deserve it.” Isn’t he asking Steve Austin to do the same thing?
Austin vs. Punk is a fun match to talk about and I don’t blame CM Punk for trying. Hey, who in the WWE locker room doesn’t want to wrestle Steve Austin at WrestleMania? But there is something here. Austin and Punk appear to be very friendly on Twitter, often tweeting to or about one another. Austin has said complimentary things about Punk in media interviews over the last year. It just appears to me that if Austin was going to come back into the ring and work with anyone right now, it would be Punk.
"Thanks for your dedication and all of the hard work. I appreciate it very much." - Steve Austin
