WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin weighed in on the big title change that will air on Friday Night Smackdown.
As it turns out, he is a big fan of new WWE World Champion Jack Swagger, but he’s also a realist when it comes to putting such a big belt on the youngster.
When asked his thoughts on Swagger cashing in Money in the Bank just days after WrestleMania 26, Austin offered up these thoughts via Twitter.
“Sounds too soon to me. The kid does have a bright future though.”
That seems to be the opinion of a lot of people at the moment.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin Discusses His Return To World Wrestling Entertainment As Guest Host Of Monday Night RAW (And How The Audience Saw A Toned-Down Version Of “Stone Cold” As A Result Of The WWE’s Change To A PG Rating), His Transition Into The World Of Acting (And The Reaction From The Mainstream Press), What His Fans Can Expect In His New Movie “Damage,” Why He Does Not See Shawn Michaels Stopping The Undertaker’s Undefeated WrestleMania Streak, His Thoughts On Goldberg’s Rumored WWE Return, & The Importance Of His Relationship With Jim Ross Through The Years.
Interview Highlights
His relationship with his long-time friend, colleague, & fellow WWE Hall Of Famer, Jim Ross: “He was a tremendous help to me in my career all the way from WCW & calling my matches in the WWE. He was the guy that knew how to talk about ‘Stone Cold’ in the right way. Everyone knows me & Jim are very close personal friends. He was just in L.A. having some meetings and spent the night over my house. He’s a very good friend of mine.”
How the transition into acting was for Austin, especially with the mainstream world not taking professional wrestling & sports-entertainment too seriously: “It’s funny what some people in the outside world (or “mainstream”) think about pro wrestling or the people involved in pro wrestling. I’m humble when speaking about my acting. I think I have talent, and I think I have ability, but I still have to develop as an actor. It’s just like what I did in the ring. I was very green but I became very, very accomplished in the 20×20 ring. There’s not too many people that’s done what I’ve in that business. I don’t think pro wrestling necessarily prepares you to be a great actor, but my pro wrestling career, my largest body of work, and is the reason I’m getting the opportunities I’m getting in the movie world, and I take that very seriously. If someone as a certain opinion about my old business or my love of professional wrestling, then so be it.”
The Experience Of Returning To The WWE To Guest Host RAW Two Weeks Ago & How The Viewing Audience Saw A Tamed-Down “Stone Cold” That Evening (As Result Of The WWE’s Change To A PG Rating): “Being back in San Diego on Monday Night RAW was a blast, but probably the most fun for me was hanging backstage, sitting at a table, and talking to Triple H & Shawn Michaels, hanging out with The Big Show, and riding back to L.A. with John Cena…you know just spending time with the guys. I still love the wrestling business, and I always will. It’s responsible for where I am today, and I had so much fun doing it. I love being in front of the crowd, and I love my fans, but it’s changed a lot since I left. I was a very edgy, aggressive act as ‘Stone Cold,’ with the language, the middle fingers, & the beer. But it’s a PG show now, so I kinda went out there with handcuffs on so to speak. I couldn’t use all my tricks because it’s more of a kid-friendly show & a corporate- sponsorship friendly show, and I think that’s a great direction for the WWE to go in, because I think we pushed the envelope as far as you can push it back in the day when I was running roughshod over everybody. It was exciting.”
Why He Does Not See Shawn Michaels Stopping The Undertaker’s Undefeated WrestleMania Streak: “When I look at the card, of course I’m looking forward to Bret vs. Vince, but probably what I’m forward to the most is Shawn Michaels vs. ‘The Streak.’ I don’t think the streak will be snapped. Shawn Michaels is probably the best WrestleMania performer in the history of the business. He is going to pull out all the stops and that’s probably the marquee match for me.”
What a possible Bill Goldberg return would mean for World Wrestling Entertainment: “It’ll be interesting to see. His only year in the WWE was what it was, and you guys know what it was. So it’ll be interesting to see what he’ll bring to the table as far as is there a demand for him. I think with the lack of real depth on the roster, there could definitely be a spot for him. The business has changed so much, and even though Bill wasn’t an act that was carved out of ‘Stone Cold,’ his act is different too, so you gotta go out there & put a little time in the ring. It would take some work for him to make the transition into what is going out in the wrestling world today.”
More is contained in this exclusive interview with “The Texas Rattlesnake,” including the differences between his latest movie “Damage” & his forthcoming film “The Expendables” (starring Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke, Jet-Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, & Randy Couture), why he has not had the opportunity to speak with Dwayne Johnson in a lenghy period of time, & if he could ever envision himself exchanging notes with The Rock about their respective acting careers, plus so much more. The only place to find “Stone Cold” on WrestleMania Sunday is exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network!
Stone Cold Steve Austin made an appearance in Cambridge on Friday to grill burgers and throw back a couple of drinks at The Harvard Lampoon, a semi-secret Sorrento Square social organization that used to occasionally publish a so-called humor magazine.
The Lampoon hosted the event with the former World Wrestling Entertainment star in order “to make amends and celebrate our renewed friendship” (according to invitations left in the House), which was likely in reference to the distribution of 9/11-themed “Lever Forget” t-shirts on Housing Day.
Lured by e-mails sent over house lists inviting students to a BBQ presented by “The Harvard Lampoon and Leverett House,” crowds began to form in front of the Lampoon Castle shortly before 6 p.m. Friday. The festivities kicked off when Lampoon editors began to grill burgers and play guitars in front of the colorful doors of the Lampoon Castle. Several minutes later, Austin himself emerged from the castle amid cheers from those Cantabs in attendance.
Rather than flipping wrestlers on their backs, Austin assumed control of the grill and flipped burgers instead. After several drinks, he was also spotted chatting away with students in the crowd.
Leverett House denies any involvement with the Lampoon event.
“Leverett HoCo was never approached by the Lampoon for this event. I had not seen the ‘Harvard Lampoon and Leverett House present’ invitations, and to my knowledge that invite was not sent over Lev Open,” said Leverett House Committe Co-Chair Allison L. Sikora ’11.
“In my opinion, this is just another Lampoon prank veiled as an olive branch for their tasteless Housing Day stunt in which they distributed shirts that not only had an inappropriate reference to the events of Sept. 11 but also used the image and name of Leverett House without permission,” she added.
Steve Austin was on The BJ Shea Morning Experience on KISW.com. Steve Migliore passed along the following recap.
I asked Stone Cold if he plans on being at WrestleMania: “No, I’m not going to be at WrestleMania. I really want to be because I at least wanted to go to the Hall Of Fame, you know, rather then the show just because I love the Hall Of Fame so much and I think it’s such a wonderful deal. But I’m gonna be, I’m in New York City right now, I’m fixing to take off to Boston and then I head to LA, Vancouver and then I’m in Seattle for a day so I’m going to miss the event but I’m looking forward to it, I’ll probably have to record it, but I’ll watch it when I get home.”
I then asked him if he has ever considered jumping back in the ring one more time. I mentioned how Goldberg brought up Austin’s name when talking about how he thinks that he (Goldberg) has “one more match in him.” Here is what Steve had to say:
“You know that would be fun working with Bill. I’ve always liked Bill and gotten along with him. I haven’t talked to him in quite sometime, he’s a good guy. But no for me, I’m going to leave well enough alone, I rode off into the sunset and my health is good right now. I have another couple of matches left in my body but I won’t choose to exercise those matches.
“I don’t want to go out there and be 90-95% of what Stone Cold Steve Austin was because I’m not going to sack and do it all, but I could be close, but that’s not good enough and there’s really no point in it. It’s not going to take me any farther in my acting career so it would be all for naught. I love my fans, I love that business, but I want to be remembered for what I was not for what I ended up being.”
Which led me to asking him about his thoughts on guys like Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, guys that are still wrestling:
“You know what, it’s just that their legacy will always be what it is. Ric Flair is my favorite pro wrestler in the world. Hogan’s had a great career and I’ll leave it at that.”
HighDefDigest.com has reported that the Steve Austin film “The Stranger” will be out on BluRay June 1, 2010.
But… Austin stated via Twitter to a fan who asked about the movie release:
“yes. i completed the stranger 6 months ago. dont know the release date.”
————–
HDD is stating that: In a press advertisement, it seems Anchor Bay Entertainment will be releasing ‘The Stranger’ also starring Erica Cerra and Adam Beach for a high-definition release on June 1.
I checked out the official Anchor Bay Entertainment website myself, and I didn’t see anything regarding a press release or word of the movie.
